This year we visited several biobanks in Europe including a private biobank. Basically tissue banking is carried out for each research project in the academic biobanks and specimens of specific diseases are collected and stored. The procedure of tissue preservation is almost the same as Japanese biobanks. Difference is found in informed-consent form; there were variety of items that indicate detail of expected use of specimens compared to Japan where we use 'broad consent'. The private biobank in Germany  manages not only banking but also research support such as immunohistochemistry gene expression analysis and drug profiling. In Japan collaboration among biobanks is developing lead by three major banks Biobank Japan National Center Biobank Network Tohoku Medical Megabank.
