To provide effective language learning, a highly reliable and efficient placement test is required to accurately measure the learners' Japanese ability. The author and co-researchers have been developing such a test. The form and content of the test have changed drastically over the past 30 years, with the increase in student numbers, and technical innovations such as computers and the Internet. In this paper, changes in the placement test over time are outlined, followed by a description of contents and application of the current online TTBJ placement test.},
