 note = {In Western philosophical tradition the place of chance in the history of human societies is either seen as a characteristic way of existence, and thus history is reduced to a form of chaos solely dependent on individual or collective passions and interests, or is put aside by reason of fatalism or necessitarianism, dependent on providence or a higher order acting behind the visible contingency of historical events. This article will show that such indecision between the two points of view comes from an inadequate definition of the notion of chance, and will discuss the works of the philosopher Augustin Cournot (1801-1877) in reconciling historical determinism and contingency of historical events.  要旨 西洋哲学の伝統において、人間社会の出来事における偶然性の位置づけは曖昧であり、ある時は、出来事は、個人的あるいは集団的な、目まぐるしく変化するような情念や利益に無秩序に還元されるので特徴的な存在様式として示されるのだが、またある時は、出来事は、歴史的出来事の仮象の偶然性の背後に、強力な神の摂理や神の秩序を援用しつつも、宿命論つまり必然論が有利に働くことを否定する。本論は、こうした曖昧さが偶然性という概念について不十分な定義を有していること、およびオーギュスタン・クールノー(1801-1877)という哲学者の教義を分析し、歴史的決定論と歴史的出来事の偶然性とを調停させることを示すものである。},
