Zeus in Greek mythology, for example, transforms himself into a swan to get physically involved with Leda. It is often the male who goes through a change in the west, but it is more often the female than the male who is a transformer in myths and legends in Asia. Tackling the Japanese films based on the Chinese legend of the White Snake, which was written down by Feng Menglong in 1624, I wish to explore the representation of the White Snake in a gender-conscious perspective. The White Snake films have scarcely been examined in any academic discipline. I intend to take into consideration the credited Japanese novel by Fusao Hayashi, The Sorcery of Mrs. White, which promises her a happy ending contrary to the Chinese original. The goal of this project is to compare the White Snake films in Japan and China to clarify differences in characterizing a non-human female creature who desires to unite with a human male.
