Among overseas Japanese art researchers, the Museum of East Asian Art in Cologne is known for its rare and extensive collection of Japanese sculptures in Europe. While it has been noted that the collection was acquired from an art historical perspective, there has been no research conducted on the complete content of the collection and its exhibition at that time from the perspective of art history and museum studies. This paper is a study of a single museum’s Buddhist art collection and is based on documentary research using museum guidebooks, art books, and articles in art magazines.
