In considering the history of racial discrimination and education in the United States, concern about historically Black colleges and universities (HBCUs) has been growing. Based on my teaching experience at the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff during the 2012 2013 academic year, this essay will introduce the social and historical backgrounds of HBCUs and their role in the American South. I intend to argue in favor of the significance of teaching and learning racial issues in Japan through examples of public lectures in Japan titled “Black History Month in Akita and Tokyo” in February 2019.
