By analyzing S?seki’s notes on Charles Edward Mallet’s The French Revolution (1897), his concerns regarding Rousseau’s concept of natural rights and its influence on the French Revolution are revealed. In his paper on Walt Whitman, S?seki mentions the Romantics who reacted to ideas arising from the French Revolution. His discussion is based on Edward Dowden’s Studies of Literature (1789-1877). By comparing the contents of the two papers, the different viewpoints become evident. In addition, through research on S?seki’s notes of Dowden ’s The French Revolution and English Literature (1897), this paper clarifies a point S?seki mentions in Literary Theory: that the literary circle which reacted to the French Revolution was the Romantic school.
